hate-fundraisingIt‘s no secret that most people hate the prospect of having to fundraise when urgent needs suddenly arise. Usually a lot of time & effort is required planning & executing a fundraising event, the cost per dollar raised is too high and the return on investment too low for their liking. Asking others for money tends to bring a sense of fear (specifically of rejection), embarrassment, shame and unworthiness, too. Hey, we get it. Nevertheless, it’s something that’s necessary for many teams to do during these difficult economic times as costs, fees & expenses are at an all-time high, and unfortunately not many are covered under the normal operating budgets of most school athletic departments.

To try and reframe this negative way of thinking, below we’ve compiled a collection of quotes from several sources that we believe will help give your team a renewed sense of confidence & comfort — and decreased stress & anxiety levels — when asking others for support!

“Fundraisers should use pride, not apology, when asking for a gift for a charity that is doing good work.” – Henry A. Rosso

“Never think you need to apologize for asking someone to give to a worthy objective, any more than as though you were giving him an opportunity to participate in high-grade investment. The duty of giving is as much his as the duty of asking yours. Whether or not he should give to that particular enterprise, and if so, how much, it is for him alone to decide.” – John D. Rockefeller

“The most important thing is not to let fundraising get you down. (You) live or die on morale. If you let the difficulty of raising money destroy your morale, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.” – Paul Graham

“We should never forget that no Fundraising effort ever succeeds unless one person asks another person for money.” – Andrew D. Parker Jr.

On action and inaction…

“I have tried raising money by asking for it, and by not asking for it. I always got more by asking for it.”

“Fundraising is both an art and a science. The art of fundraising is equal parts expressing the need, sharing your passion to help, and courageously asking others to support you on your journey. Keep it personal and simple. Maybe even a little creative. Whichever approach you choose, make it uniquely yours.  The science of fundraising is all about applying years of research to building strong relationships and helping donors see how their donations are making a positive impact. You can increase your chances of success by combining the art and science of fundraising.” – Unknown Author

On the subject of donations…

“Out of ten swings at the bat, you get maybe seven strikeouts, two base hits, and if you are lucky, one home run. The base hits and the home runs pay for all the strikeouts.” – Marc Andressen

In the end …

“The only thing that matters a damn is the donor experience.” – Mark Phillips

“Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God – the rest will be given.” – Mother Teresa
